Prepare the ingredients.
Pour boiling water over dates to soften, then drain water off. Stir in treacle, butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla.
Fold in flour and baking powder. Place caramel in basins. Top with sponge mixture. Cover with foil and secure with string.
Measure 300ml water into the bowl. Place the basins into the steaming basket and lower into the bowl.
Cooking time: 25 min.
